The Leadershape Institute
During the week of December 10-15, 2011, I attended a six day leadership retreat held at Camp Higher Ground in West Harrison, Indiana. The retreat is formally put on by The LeaderShape Institute of Cincinnati and the goal for all participants is to further develop the skills and attributes of a leader as well as to define a well-developed goal for our futures. Those involved in the retreat included two leaders: Sonja Ardoin and Michael Anthony, six UC faculty to facilitate small group activities as family cluster leaders, two on site student coordinators, and the some fifty retreat participants consisting of students at all levels of their undergraduate education. Each day was fully scheduled with activities to maximize our opportunity for growth. Some of these activities included a low ropes course, problem solving, DiSC personal profile system, the Starpower game, and daily reflections. However, the main project that spanned throughout the entire week was to define for ourselves a vision of a specific goal we want to pursue and achieve in our future. Particular, this process consisted of defining first what interests and passions we have, deciding what area incorporates these ideas, and finally coming up with a plan to put into action. We made both short term and long-term goals. Overall, this vision was defined in a Breakthrough Blueprint, which lists my vision, goals, values, and action plan. Not only was I able to enhance my capabilities as a leader during this experience, I made connections and friendships with faculty and students that will last throughout my entire career at UC and hopefully beyond. This learning experience challenged me to honestly look inside myself and determine how I can make a difference in the world and guided me towards the steps that will allow me to make that difference. All in all, I had a wonderful time during this retreat and I encourage other students to consider participating in the future.
Below are links to artifacts documenting my experience.
Breakthrough Blueprint: This piece of paper displays my vision that I developed throughout the week that I am going to try and implement into UC's organizations in the coming year. It signifies the one of the key projects completed during the retreat.
DiSC Analysis: This booklet had a series of steps to help determine my personality type as well as attempt to define some of my strengths and weaknesses. It was used as a tool to help determine how I can interact most effectively with others.
