English 2989 Honors
During the 2012 Fall Semester, I was enrolled in English 2989 Honors. This course was an enhanced English course that challenged me to think outside of the box and write with intent and creativity. I was able to expand my writing practice through each paper that I completed and learn how to incorporate personal experiences to captivate the audience. I learned how to critique my own writing in order to focus on what I can do to improve in the future. I practiced editing fellow students papers, which allowed me to gain new perspective on each genre we wrote within. We wrote three essays throughout the semester: a literary analysis, genre analysis, and discourse analysis. My professor greatly assisted me throughout this course and I attribute my improvements to her unique style of teaching. Overall, this course allowed me to improve my writing skills while at the same time allowing the expression of my personal style of writing.
The photo above represents my inspiration in writing. At the beginning of the term, my professor asked us to think about what gives us inspiration in life and I chose nature. Whenever I am able to be completely absorbed in the nature around me, I feel most content with myself and with life. It is in nature that I am able to think calm and be creative.
Listed below are my essays.
The objective of the first essay was to reflect back on how I learned to read and write. In other words, what influenced me as a grew up that is reflected in how I write today. The assignment gave me the opportunity to focus in on how blessed I am to have these abilities and challenged me to define a part of myself that I developed as a young student.
The second essay assignment was to do a self critique of a previous essay in order to learn from our mistakes and become a better writer. I was challenged here to find reasons why I did not believe my old essay was a good reflection of my writing ability and learn for the future.
The third and final essay also happened to be my favorite. The discourse paper allowed me to do research on a particular part of Cincinnati history. Since I am from Cincinnati, I particularly enjoyed touring the city in order to find a research topic. I was challenged to dig deeper under the surface of Rookwood Pottery and explain how its presence in the city has particular effects on smaller communities.
